My First Love

I fell in love in 2017. I was barely sixteen at the time. We met at school, I think that’s where most love stories stem from. It wasn’t love at first sight. Our love gradually blossomed and developed over time until it withered, like most first loves.

He was the new guy at school. Cliché? I know. A large number of girls in the class found him attractive and he was. He was tall and dark and also shy, I think that was what added to his appeal. He was extremely introverted and hard to read. He kept to himself a lot, he had this aura of mystery about him. I didn’t know what his voice
sounded like because I had never heard him speak before.

We weren’t close or anything of the sort. I regarded him as just a classmate at the time. Sure, I found him attractive but nothing more.

A fellowship was organised in the school hall but I stayed back in class because the hall was overcrowded. James and his friend, Ayo also stayed back. I heard James say something about how he disliked attending the fellowship due to the rowdiness, I whipped around to face him and blurted, “So you can talk?” We all laughed at my comment. That was one of my earliest interactions with James.

Not too long after, I opened a Facebook account. It was all the rage among my classmates back then. I sent friend requests to all my classmates, James included. He accepted the request but we didn’t message each other at all.

Mariam was a friend of mine who I suspected had feelings for James. We were out in a neighborhood one day when she suggested that we visit James because his house was close by. When I returned home,I was met with a message from James. It was a simple ‘Hi’. I replied with a similar greeting and from that day, we began chatting constantly. We’d chat about different things, school, church and even talk about our classmates. From Facebook messages, we graduated to calls. We were chatting on Facebook and calling each other frequently. Little did I know, I was falling with rapid speed, no brakes present.

The dynamic of our relationship changed significantly in August 2018. My social media presence had dwindled due to a number of reasons. I was rarely online. We were chatting like always when he surprised me with a text, I love you. it was close to midnight. I was caught off guard, what? why? when? how? He immediately backtracked, just like a sister. Being the timid soul that he was, I suspected he didn’t want to put himself out there, he probably lost confidence in the few seconds between the messages. Maybe, he misinterpreted my reaction.

The following day at school, we acted like the conversation the night before didn’t happen. We rarely talked to each other in class anyway, most of our conversations were online and in the form of calls.

In October, he officially asked me to be his girlfriend. I was elated. Fireworks were going off in my head like the Fourth of July. I was on cloud nine. I felt special, like a queen. But you know how we girls liked to play hard to get. I told him that I would think about it even though at that very moment I wanted to shout a Yes so loud that the entire universe would hear it clearly. He told me to come off it joor. I finally said yes and we became a couple.

We went out together, had a lot of fun. He actually asked me to meet his mom. His parents were aware of our relationship and they were cool with it. His church members also knew about us.

James invited me to his church for a Christmas program. The program ended late and he offered to escort me home. On the way, he held my hand and told me that he liked me so much. You can imagine I how felt at the moment, I wanted to combust in excitement. We were walking so slowly because we wanted that moment to last forever. He was sooo shy. He wrapped me in his arms unknown to both of us that my elder brother was behind us. James shyly left the scene. Thankfully, my elder brother didn’t talk about it or make it an issue. I was so relieved.

Sadly our relationship was short-lived. We broke up in November, only a few short weeks after we got together. He told me that he still loved me even though our relationship had come to an end…..

Hey guys, Jay. Here. This is not my story, I just wanted to clarify that. Also, this is not the end of the story. It continues next week.
SUBSCRIBE If you want me to post the second part of the story. Hope you have a lovely weekend.

How was your first love experience?

Science, Art or Commercial. Does it really matter?

Hey guys, welcome back to my blog and if you’re new here, thanks for clicking on that link. So, this isn’t the post that I had originally planned for this weekend but I had a  conversation with an old friend last night and I decided to address the issue.

There comes a point in every students life where they have to decide on what path they’re going to take concerning the future of their education. Science, Art or Commercial?

For as long as I’ve been on this earth, there’s always been an unending argument centred on which department is the best. Undue importance has been placed on the Science department. It has been glorified to some kind ultimate department which I think ought not to be.

When I had just graduated from the JSS Three class in secondary school and was on the brink of entering into the SSS One class, I had to make a decision on what department I wanted to belong to. I chose the art department which surprised everyone but myself.

I got questioned a lot about my choice of department. Oh, science is for intelligent people, You shouldn’t be in the art department, you’re qualified to be a science student blah blah blah. Some of my classmates were even surprised that I had chosen the art department. My parents didn’t really care what department I had chosen so long as I was getting an education. But other people felt the need to interfere in my choice. Some teachers tried to change my mind. One teacher even went as far as calling my parents to convince me to change my mind.

Oh, I’m sorry that I’m not interested in formulas and mixing chemicals(insert eye roll). I don’t want to be a doctor, nurse, engineer, scientist or any career science related so tell me why I should be in the science department.

The point is majority of the people believed that Science class was for the intelligent ones and the other departments were meant for the less intelligent ones because apparently the Science department is tougher than the rest. Oh, please. Every department has its own hurdles, no one has it that easy.

No department is better than the other in my opinion, they’re all different. You don’t have to be in a particular department because you’re “intelligent”. You being in the science department doesn’t mean you’re intelligent and you being in any other department doesn’t mean you’re not intelligent. You should only be in the department in which you want to be, end of story.

It’s also annoying how the science students believe that they’re better than the other students. Really, really, really annoying.

You don’t need to look down on a person based on what department they belong to.

So my dear, you can be whoever you want to be and be in whatever department is best for you and matches your passion or interests.

P.S Forgive my sloppy writing, I just wrote it this morning.

An embarrassing moment in my life

I’ve never shared this story with anyone before so I just decided, ‘why not write it on my blog?’ It happened a few years ago when I was in the JSS Three class of secondary school. I was twelve at the time. I had a seatmate named Aishat. We were kind of close.Anyways, it happened during the Home economics period. It was the last class of the day. The teacher, we called her Madam. I think she was discussing the topic of puberty or something like that. At one point, she started talking about armpits and armpit hair as a sign of puberty, blah blah blah…She then asked if there was anyone among us who didn’t have armpit hair. Nobody raised their hand or said anything. I should have raised my hand but I didn’t because who wants to admit something like that in front of the whole class? Before I knew what was happening, my hand was suddenly in the air. It wasn’t magic. It was my seatmate, Aishat who pushed my hand up. I glared at her and tried to lower my hand before Madam could notice. But being the skinny kid that I was,I was no match against her firm push. I kept struggling but Aishat wouldn’t let go of my arm. Madam noticed and do you know what she said?*Insert crying emoji here*She said,’As you can see, her breasts have not yet started growing/developing yet.’ She said it so casually like it was a normal thing to say and in front of the whole class no less. You know me, I was mortified. I just wanted the ground to open up and swallow me. It was sooo embarrassing. I wanted to cease to exist at that very moment.Click on the like button if you liked this post.Have you ever had any embarrassing moments? Please share in the comments section. My First Semester at the University- Toyosi, Uniben Akoka

New environments can be quite a bit overwhelming especially added with the academic pressures. Toyosi,a student of a typical Nigerian University has chosen to share with us a little of her experiences during her first semester at the University conducted during my interview with her.

What was it like on your first day of school?

“It was an overwhelming experience because I was new to the University environment and system where I was not privy to all the unwritten rules and regulations. From asking for help from strangers to locating the lecture halls, it was a somewhat tiring experience. It was also boring because I had no acquaintances yet at the time.”

Were people mean to you on your first day?

“No. Everyone was really nice and polite. Other people approached me before striking up a conversation with them.”

Was it easy to make friends?

“It was easy to make friends, mostly in class. Good conversation starters such as,’what subject is this, what do we have next?’and from there to discussing about assignments and registration among other things. Very soon, we were inviting each other to our hostels and eating together. That’s how friendship begins.”
How did you cope with roommates?

“It wasn’t difficult at first because you’re all new to each other and very friendly until you really get to know each other. I would also say first impressions are important especially kindness. It’s important to be polite and friendly. The attitude you give out is what you will get in return like ‘do me I do you, man no go vex’. After living together for a while, you begin to discover each other’s annoying habits. Some people don’t like being corrected. You quarrel and makeup, quarrel and makeup again. It’s a recurring cycle.”

Did you have any problems with any lecturer or staff of the university?

“Not really. There were little test and attendance issues, just minor issues though, nothing major.”

Is it hard being away from your family for the first time?

“What I really miss is my younger sister doing my chores for me. Plus, I have relatives who live not very far from the university. Then again, I’m free so what’s there to miss?”

Did you encounter any financial problems?

“The expenses were endless, test payments, photocopies, minor wants like a handbag that I fancy or footwear and also some meat or chicken when I felt like it. Seeking financial assistance from home consecutively wasn’t the best idea. We’re all aware of the economic situation of the country. Fortunately, I could sustain myself because of my skills in hairstyling and making pastries such as doughnuts to sell. Sometimes, I got blisters for standing too long due to hairstyling. It made me miss secondary school a bit because a very large percentage of my expenses at the time were taken care of by my parents. Now, I have to be a little more independent. That’s why it’s important to possess a skill that you can harness to your advantage.”

How do you handle relationships along with school stress?

“It was good having someone to talk to and have fun with. Classes typically end by four or five at noon. I retire back to the hostel to rest and do other necessary stuff. Then later, we see each other, talk about how our day went among other things. When you’re with your partner, it helps relieve some of the stress. It’s like both of you are in your own little bubble where what is going on outside cannot penetrate.”

How do you deal with theft among students?

“ There’s nothing like stealing in my hostel. Although, one of my clothes went missing when I put it out to dry after washing but I believe it was human error. Someone probably accidentally packed it along with her clothes by mistake.”

Do you have enemies?

“ I wouldn’t necessarily call them enemies but it’s not uncommon for some people to naturally dislike you. Everybody can’t like you or be your friend. Some pretend as though they like you but deep inside, they hate you. I won’t say I have enemies but I have people that I don’t want to roll with at all.”

What is the student life like?

“Students do a lot of crazy shit, young people in general do a lot of funny things. Sometimes,my friends and I leave our hostel when there’s no electricity and go to church because of the electricity present there. We take our extensions and chargers. It’s the main reason why we go to church. We take other people’s drinks for fun and laugh about it together. We go to parties uninvited to eat food. It’s just like secondary school but more advanced because of the presence of freedom and independence. You can go out at anytime without anyone questioning you about where you’re headed to. You can also return at anytime without questions like,’ where are you coming from?’ If you like, go to your boyfriend’s place for hundred days, noone will hold you to it. School gossip is also entertaining, extraordinary everyday.”

Have you adjusted properly to the university environment and system?

“ Yes, very well. It’s like second nature to me now.”

In summary, how was your first semester at the university?

“ Stressful. It came at me from different angles. The stress of registration, going early to classes coupled with my business. It was a lot. There was just a little fun here and there.”

If you had a chance to relive your first semester, what would you have done differently?

“ I would have stopped the trades that I did during my first semester. It only added to the stress. I would have also gone out more. I was a little scared of going out because I’m not used to going out.”
